Do you know that a crab average lifespan is around 4 years?
It is not that short if we compare them with other animal species. Crabs enjoy living in groups, protecting ,questing for food and sharing it with each other, as if they were a huge family. But some of them prefer to stay alone. It depends on the specie and, of course, on their mood.
Yes, crabs can be moody sometimes!
There are more than 4.500 species. They vary in size and color, but they all have an exoskeleton. To sounds easier, we can call it a shell or carapace that protects the tissue underneath it.
The sand crabs live on the sand and are able to swim.
As Zoe the crab says in the book, she feels silly because she walks sideways. It can be cool walking sideways, don't you think?
However, some crabs can walk forwards and backwards.
They are crustaceans. What???
Yes! Crustaceans are animals that live in water and have a hard outer shell.
Crabs, lobsters, shrimp and prawns are crustaceans. The majority of crustaceans live in either marine or freshwater environment, but a few groups have adapted to life on land.
Crabs are omnivores, meaning that they eat both plants and meat. Their favourite food are other crustaceans, mollusks, fungi, algae and also rest of food left on the beach.
Have you seen crabs on the beach? How do they behave?
